2024 Warren Alpert Distinguished Scholars

We are pleased to announce that the nomination period for the Annual Warren Alpert Distinguished Scholars Fellowship Award is now open. The Award will support individual postdoctoral scientists of exceptional creativity in the field of neurosciences.

The Warren Alpert Distinguished Scholars program will support individual scientists of exceptional creativity who have an MD or PhD degree (or both) and who have completed a minimum of three years and no more than 6 years of a post-doctoral fellowship by July 1, 2024 in the field of  neurosciences and hold a post-doctoral research position at a United States medical school, research institute or academic hospital. 

These awards are given as a transitional post-doctoral award for recipients to enable their advance to a full-time faculty member at the Assistant Professor level or higher. The medical school, research institute or academic hospital appointing the scholar will be awarded $200,000 annually for two years to cover their salary, lab costs, and related expenses.  Under certain circumstances, the awardee may transfer funding in year 2 to support their faculty position.  Indirect cost of up to 15% of direct costs, may be included in the $200,000.  All applicants are required to provide 75% effort.

To be considered for the Warren Alpert Distinguished Scholars Fellowship Award, please submit the following to the Office of Biomedical Postdoctoral Programs (attn. Subin Lee) at:  postdoc@pennmedicine.upenn.edu. Only UPenn postdocs are eligible for this competition.  The selected applicant will be informed of the next steps for the final submission of the proposal.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION TO THE OFFICE OF BIOMEDICAL POSTDOCTORAL PROGRAMS (BPP) IS:  October 1, 2023.

 

All proposal must be submitted as a single pdf file to the Biomedical Postdoctoral Programs at:  postdoc@pennmedicine.upenn.edu. The name of the Fellowship (Warren Alpert) must appear in the Subject line of the email (e.g., Re: Warren Alpert Fellowship). The filename should follow: Alpert_Last name,_first name_application (e.g., Alpert_Smith, Jane_application).

PLEASE, INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS, WHICH SHOULD BE NO MORE THAN 5 SINGLE SPACED PAGES, ½ INCH MARGINS AND 11PT OR GREATER FONT. THE 5 PAGES DOES NOT INCLUDE THE BIBLIOGRAPHY, CV, BUDGET AND 3 LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION. 

  • Title 
  • Mentor name and department
  • "Application Coordinator" - the name and contact information for the BA/grants manager that handles the postdoc/mentor admin paperwork (or financial aspects of the proposal) is included. 
  • Summary of the research 
  • Introduction, importance of the project, methods and likely presentation results. 
  • One-half page on the background of the applicant and the special characteristics that he/she has for implementing the project and career plan. 
  • Bibliography 
  • A CV in NIH format 
  • A budget in G.300 R&R Format (aka: SF 424 R&R Budget).  Please be certain to include budget justification 
  • Three letters of recommendation.   
    • NOTE:  Letters of recommendation will need to be sent separately to the Biomedical Postdoctoral Programs at:  postdoc@pennmedicine.upenn.eduThe name of the Fellowship (Warren Alpert) and the Last Name, First Name of the postdoc applicant must appear in the Subject line of the email (e.g., Re: Warren Alpert Fellowship_Smith, Jane_Recommendation letter). Filename should follow: Alpert_Last name,_first name;_Rec_Letter_Metor last name (e.g., Alpert_Smith, Jane_Rec_letter_Li)
