Accepting Nominations for the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award

This award is given annually to a faculty member in the Perelman School of Medicine who fulfills the following criteria:

  • Consistently demonstrates compassion and empathy in the delivery of care to patients
  • Serves as a role model - illustrates professional behavior by example -- for students and colleagues
  • Is approachable and accessible to students
  • Welcomes opportunities for teaching and one-on-one mentorships with students
  • Exhibits enthusiasm and skill in professional and personal interactions with students
  • Shows respect for everyone
  • Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in working with patients and family members of diverse ethnic or religious backgrounds
  • Adheres to professional and ethical standards
  • Effectively identifies emotional concerns of patients and family members
  • Engenders trust and confidence
  • Displays competence in scientific endeavors   
  • Displays effective communication and listening skills
  • Shows respect for the patient's viewpoint
  • Adheres to professional and ethical standards
  • Is sensitive to the patient’s psychological well-being
  • Understands patients’ need for interpretation of complex medical diagnoses and treatments and makes an effort to ensure patient comprehension - shows respect for the patient’s viewpoint
  • Committed to reflection and objective self –evaluation of his/her skills


The awardee will be recognized at the School of Medicine Graduation on Sunday, May 19th at 9:00am at the Kimmel Center.  If you are interested in nominating a candidate, please send a one-page nomination letter to osa@pennmedicine.upenn.edu by Friday, March 22nd.  The Committee will only accept one single nomination letter from each nominator.  No other supporting information (nominee's CV, additional letters, etc) will be considered.
