Alongside the devastating loss of life due to COVID-19, more than 75,000 people died from an opioid overdose in the first year of the pandemic, an increase of 35 percent over the prior year. At the same time, policymakers worked to lower barriers to life-saving treatment, creating more opportunities for flexible telehealth and harm reduction approaches.
