Call for Associate Faculty Director of Medical Student Scholarship and Research

Penn medical students are encouraged to immerse themselves in scholarly work throughout their tenure at our school. Some students will choose to do research after the summer of the first year. Others will do a full scholarly year out program. All are currently required to do at least a short term Scholarly Pursuit project in the final year of medical school. The person in this newly-created position will promote and coordinate all of these activities for medical students who are not in the MD/PhD program. They will report jointly to the Associate Dean for Combined Degree and Physician Scholars Programs (Skip Brass, MD PhD) and the Senior Vice Dean for Medical Education (Suzi Rose, MD), and be assisted by staff members in the Combined Degree and Physician Scholars Programs office. Faculty support for this position is available up to 10% FTE.

 

Duties & Responsibilities include:

· Help students find research and scholarly activities in basic, translational, clinical, educational and global health research, including entrepreneurial and innovation projects.

· Facilitate the Dean’s letter of support for all scholarly opportunities with aid from Student Affairs and the Office of Combined Programs

· Work collaboratively with offices throughout PennMedicine and Penn to collate potential research opportunities and create a database of such opportunities.

· Establish and oversee an annual Student Research Day

· Oversee the Scholarly Pursuit Curriculum

· Oversee and expand the Scholarly Year program

· Work with Student Affairs on a section about scholarship/research for the MSPE

· Coordinate an enhanced website for Medical Student Scholarship and Research

· Create a curriculum for students pursuing research: integrity, methodology, etc.

· Work with the IRB to streamline processes for student projects

· Gathering and analyzing data on student involvement in scholarship over time.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

· Full-time faculty member

· MD, PhD or both

· Research experience

· Experience working with medical students

 

Preferred Qualifications

· Demonstrated commitment to medical and/or graduate education

· Associate or full professor on either the CE or tenure tracks

· Success in receiving grants

· History of successful publication
