Please submit your self-referral to join the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) Student Standards Committee (SSC). Referrals will be accepted up until November 24th at 12pm. Please download the attachment (link at the top of this message) and email the requested information to svdeanmeded@upenn.edu.

Requested Information: (1) Completed application form; (2) Brief personal statement (1 page) including why you are interested in joining SSC, and any relevant committee and/or experience you may have; and, (3) your short-form CV (can be NIH biosketch; or no more than 3 pages CV).

We actively seek to appoint broadly representative individuals in every respect, including faculty from the basic and clinical sciences. Eligible candidates will be standing faculty members in good standing at any level of their career on the AC, CE, or tenure-track.

Positions available: 3

Expected time commitment: 3-year term beginning January 1, 2022, with the option of being renewed once, with required 90 minute, once monthly meetings. SSC members discuss and decide matters during meetings, with no work in between. Rarely, voting members will be asked to join an ad-hoc committee to discuss and decide time-sensitive matters.

Committee Information: SSC is a group of faculty, UME leadership, and staff comprised of members that represent many departments and programs within PSOM UME. Members meet monthly to review student records according to a set agenda in a confidential setting. SSC advocates for the future patients of the student and is not an advocate for the student. Among its many roles, SSC:

  • Reviews academic (including professionalism) competencies, milestones, assessments, and evaluations of PSOM students.
  • Adjudicates and monitors students needing corrective actions, including assigning disciplinary actions and/or Medical Student Performance Evaluation notations.
  • Reviews requests for leaves of absence beyond one year.
  • Reviews students for promotion and graduation.
  • Considers advanced standing requests.
  • Performs other functions as outlined, and as deemed appropriate by the Senior Vice Dean for Education.

The following describe some, but not all, principles which should be adhered to during all SSC meetings:

  • Robert’s Rules of Order shall govern SSC’s activities.
  • Confidentiality must be strictly maintained for all discussions and written materials. The written materials cannot be removed from the meeting location. In conducting its work, SSC has access to all admissions and academic materials related to students.
  • Students appear before SSC so relevant information can be acquired in a respectful way and according to due process. Direct advice should not be offered, and recommendations should not be made while the student is in the room with the Committee. Discussion among Committee members should only take place once the student leaves the room.
  • There is absolutely no recording by phone or other device by students or Committee members during the meetings.
