Charles Vollmer, MD, is now Chief of GI Surgery at Penn Medicine

The Penn Medicine Department of Surgery is pleased to announce that Charles M. Vollmer, MD, is the new Chief of the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery. A Professor of Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Vollmer is also the Director of Pancreatic Surgery and Co-Director of the Pancreatic Cyst Multidisciplinary Program at Penn Surgery.

 

An internationally acclaimed surgeon, researcher, and educational leader in the field of gastrointestinal and pancreas surgery, Dr. Vollmer is a graduate of Sidney Kimmel Medical College in Philadelphia. Following a general surgery residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital of Washington University of St. Louis, he completed a fellowship in hepatobiliary and solid organ transplantation surgery at the University of Toronto. A fellowship in medical education followed at Harvard Medical School, where he was on faculty prior to joining Penn Medicine.

 

Dr. Vollmer’s primary research focus is in technical and care elements of pancreas surgery, where he has made numerous contributions to clinical outcomes research, particularly regarding the complication of postoperative pancreas fistula.
