Description of Doctoring 1

The Doctoring curriculum focuses on humanistic interpersonal skills, knowledge about important social identities and structures, and professionalization into the field of Medicine. Students remain in the same Doctoring Small Groups from the first day of medical school through the end of their clerkship year (2.5 years). The Doctoring 1 course focuses on topics such as structural competency, race/racism in medicine, socioeconomic status, gender and sexual minorities, disability, narratives in medicine, stigma, health literacy, patient decision-making, team based care – and many more! Doctoring 1 is the first 3 semesters of medical school, Fall 2022, Spring 2023, Fall 2023. Facilitators are encouraged to stay on for the 2.5 year journey if they can.

Important changes to the Doctoring in 2022

·       Starting in Fall 2022, the prior three separate courses 1A, 1B, and 1C and now collapsed into a single course: Doctoring 1. The relational aspects still focus on patient, self, and society as before; and the content/topics are undergoing some revisions but largely remaining the same.
