Health Equity & Ethics (HCIN 6160-001)

Kevin Ahmaad Jenkins, PhD & Steven Joffe, MD, MPH

This 6-week course pairs two 3-week topics. In the first half of the course, taught by Dr. Jenkins, you will review causes of and policy approaches for health disparities and examine strategies for improving health equity through case studies and policy analysis. In the second half taught by Dr. Joffe and Dr. Largent, students will explore a framework for conducting research, including process improvement experiments, in health care, and learn to critically evaluate the ethics of their research proposals and justify them to participants, stakeholders, and review boards. (Full course description.)

Penn faculty and staff members are invited to take this 6-week long, online graduate course. Each week follows a pattern of asynchronous learning through brief videos, readings, written discussions with classmates, and real-world projects and assignments, plus a 1-hour synchronous class. Penn employees may use tuition benefits towards this course. This course is part of the Master of Health Care Innovation (MHCI) curriculum. A 4-course Certificate for Penn faculty and staff is also available.
