Improving Value and Quality in Health Care (HCIN 6080-001)

This 6-week course pairs two 3-week topics. In the first half of the course, Dr. Volpp will discuss some of the main challenges facing health insurers, efforts to reduce growth in entitlement spending, and research that uses on the effectiveness of different strategies to modify behavior through the use of incentives embedded within health insurance design. In the other half of the course taught by Dr. Fleisher, students will discuss payer drivers, measure quality and cost, deliver an elevator speech for resources to improve value, and select tools to implement a project to improve value. Penn faculty and staff members are invited to take this 6-week long, online graduate course. Each week follows a pattern of asynchronous learning through brief videos, readings, written discussions with classmates, and real-world projects and assignments, plus a 1-hour synchronous class. Penn employees may use tuition benefits towards this course. This course is part of the Master of Health Care Innovation (MHCI) curriculum. A 4-course Certificate for Penn faculty and staff is also available.
