Renewing Your State of Pennsylvania Medical License

Renewing Your State of Pennsylvania Medical License:

PA medical licenses expire on 12/31 of every even numbered year.  It is time to start thinking about the steps to renew your license!

When can I renew my PA license?

The State Board of Medicine mails/emails renewal notifications two to three months prior to the license expiration date. You cannot renew your license until you receive that notification from the State Board of Medicine. They expect to send these notifications by late October/Early November 2022.

What can I do right now?

Ensure you have met or will meet all the CME requirements for PA license renewal.  We expect increased traffic on the state website and on the CME websites in the next few months.  Allow extra time as the sites may run slowly with increased site visitors.

How many CME credits do I need to renew my State of PA license?

“In order to renew a license, completion of 100 credit hours of continuing medical education in the preceding biennial period, which runs from January 1 of the odd year through December 31 of the next even year, will be required for medical doctors. “

  • 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™
  • 12 credits of required patient safety/risk management CME
  • 2 credits of required opioid CME (Must be Category 1)
  • 2 credits of required child abuse recognition and reporting (This training MUST be received from an approved provider on this topic)
  • *The University of Pittsburg's 3-hour course is currently available. The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia faculty have also prepared a 2-hour Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting module which is in the review process by the State. Because we do not know when CHOP's course will be available, we recommend taking the currently available option from the University of Pittsburgh.  We will update when CHOP's course becomes available.
  • The remaining 64 credits must be completed in either approved Category 1 or Category 2 CME activities
    • Category 2 credits are self-reported.  Click here to download the form to report your category 2 credits.

Where can I get state required courses?

Most state required courses are available from PennCME Map online, free of charge.   Please note that free courses may still ask you to “register.” The registration charge is $0.  Visit PennCME’s State Map for details and links to free state required courses at:  https://upenn.cloud-cme.com/state-required-cme

What is the most time sensitive course?

Child abuse recognition and reporting education requires direct certification from the course provider to the state. This process may take 7 days or longer. Please allow time to ensure effective communication with the state.
