The Perelman School of Medicine has the opportunity to submit one application to the 2024 Macy Faculty Scholars Program.

 

Purpose:

 

The Macy Faculty Scholars Program, now in its second decade, aims to identify and nurture promising early career educators in medicine and nursing. The Program will help develop the next generation of national leaders in medical and nursing education by identifying outstanding educators, physicians, nurses, and role models—individuals who represent the breadth of diversity seen in learners, patient populations, and health care settings around the country. By providing the Scholars with resources—especially protected time, mentorship, and a professional network of colleagues—the Program aims to accelerate Scholars’ careers, to turn their teaching practice into scholarship, and to help them become impactful leaders locally, nationally, and beyond.

 

Candidate eligibility requirements:

  • Be a doctorally prepared faculty member in good standing.

  • Have served for three to eight years as a full-time faculty member at the time of the application, ideally at the sponsoring school.

  • Have an identified senior faculty mentor who will provide advice on the candidate’s project and career development.

  • Have an institutional commitment for the protection of 50% of the candidate’s time, conditional on the grant being awarded.

  • Have an educational scholarship project with the appropriate institutional support.

  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or its territories.

 

Review Criteria:

In their proposed educational project, applicants might explore many possible innovations in health professions education. The Foundation has particular interest in innovative projects that involve the learning environments where clinical care is delivered. Within these clinical learning environments, the Foundation is interested in projects that:

 

  • Advance equity, diversity, and belonging.

  • Enhance collaboration among health professionals, educators, and learners.

  • Prepare future health professionals to navigate and address ethical dilemmas that arise when the principles of the health professions are in conflict with barriers imposed by the health delivery system.

 

It is required that projects address one or more of the Foundation’s above priority areas.

 

This is a career development award. The Foundation is interested in candidates for whom the program will have the maximum impact at this point in their career and who also have the greatest possibility for future impact at their home institutions and beyond.

 

Funding and Award Period:

  • Salary support for up to $100,000 per year, which will protect 50% of the Scholar’s time over two years.

  • The Scholar will devote this time to a mentored educational scholarly project and other appropriate career development activities.

PSOM Review Process:

Candidates must submit the following in the order below:

  • Cover Page: Candidate name, academic rank, school, department, month and year of appointment to the faculty, email address and phone number, title of proposal, and mentor name and title.

  • Letter of nomination from department chair indicating the chair’s commitment to protecting the time of the candidate and describing the role of the candidate in the department.

  • Letter of support from the candidate’s mentor describing the characteristics that would make the candidate a future leader and indicating a commitment to advise the candidate on project work and career development.

  • Description by the candidate of the educational project to be undertaken (maximum 10,000 characters).

  • Statement by the candidate of career objectives and personal goals for this program (maximum 7,600 characters).

  • Current CV for the candidate including current and past research support.

 

Materials must be submitted in single pdf file in the following order: Cover page, letter of nomination, mentor letter of support, research proposal, statement of purpose, CV.
